Introduction to Negative Painting

An introductory online course to negative painting with watercolour artist Jill Gustavis. This workshop will teach you how to interpret the negative and positive space and light around your subject to bring new dimension to your paintings–a great course for beginner to intermediate artists. The workshop runs for approximately 3 hours and will be held via Zoom. Each workshop is limited to 6 people to maximise one-on-one engagement and learning.

In this 3-hour online workshop, join watercolour artist Jill Gustavis as she teaches the basics of negative painting. Learn all the fundamentals and come out with new techniques that will enhance the space and dimension of your paintings.

Along with live demos and interactive exercises, Jill's class will cover:

- Creating more realistic lighting within your paintings;

- Giving shapes dimension without an underdrawing;

- Identifying appropriate subjects and materials for negative painting;

- Using brushes for specific mark making.


This course is for beginner to intermediate watercolourists who are looking to learn techniques to approach subjects from a new visual perspective.

Materials you will need:

  • At least two colours of paint (artist grade is recommended)
  • At least one brush capable of strokes ranging from mid-size (equivalent of a round 8-10) to fine detail
  • Pencil
  • Palette or dish mix to washes in
  • Rag
  • 2 Rinse cups (one for washing, one for clean water)
  • Paper towel (optional)
  • Masking fluid (optional)
  • Masking tape (optional)
  • Sketchbook or loose paper of your choice*
    • 100% cotton is recommended
  • Paper for painting project*
    • 100% cotton is recommended
    • 140lb (255gsm) minimum is recommended to prevent warping with washes

*Either hot press or cold press
