Is this set only for gouache?

No. While the sketchbook and palette are well suited to gouache, they also work beautifully with watercolour and other wet media. The mixing guide can be applied to opaque paints more broadly.

Is this set suitable for beginners?

Yes. The tools are approachable and forgiving, the colour-mixing guide is easy to follow, and the course access is beginner-friendly — but there’s no pressure to “study” anything to enjoy using the set.

Do I have to take the course?

Not at all. The 90-day course access is included as a bonus. You can use the set entirely on its own, and dip into the course only if and when you feel like it. The course is fully recorded, so you can watch at your own pace.

Does the palette really keep paint wet?

Yes. The air-tight palette is designed to keep gouache paint wet between sessions, so it’s ready to use again without re-mixing. It can also be used for other media.

When will my order ship?

If 70 or more sets are pre-ordered before the project ends, orders will ship in mid April 2026. We’ll keep you updated by email, and you’ll receive a tracking link as soon as your set is on its way.

What happens if the minimum isn't reached?

If the project doesn’t reach 70 orders, all pre-order customers will be refunded in full within 3 working days.

Is this a limited release?

Yes. This is a Llamated Edition set and will only be produced if the minimum order is met.

Why Hot Press paper?

Hot Press paper has a smooth surface, created by pressing the paper during production. That smoothness makes it especially well suited to gouache, where clean edges, flat colour, and controlled layering matter.

It also works beautifully if you like combining wet media with dry media. Pens, pencils, and markers glide easily on Hot Press paper, making it a great choice for mixed-media work or adding fine details over paint.

In short: it’s a versatile surface that gives you control — whether you’re painting, drawing, or doing a bit of both.

Why 100% cotton?

Cotton paper is the best surface for watercolour and is also great for mixed media. 100% cotton paper is capable of taking multiple heavy washes, stands up well to damaging techniques like dry brushing, and helps keep the pigment looking vibrant over the passage of time. The surface provides the perfect level of brush resistance while allowing the pigment to flow beautifully across the page. Those that "upgrade" to 100% cotton paper often credit it as having had a greater impact on their art than the quality of paint that they use.

Why is acid-free paper important?

The best paper is acid-free and has a high amount of cotton. Using acid-free paper helps to prevent the "yellowing" that can happen in paper over the years, meaning your art will stand the test of time.

Can you paint on both sides of the paper?

Yes you can. The sketchbook has 44 pages (or 22 sheets) and each page can be painted on thanks to the quality of the paper.

WHAT'S IN THE COURSE?

This recorded course introduces the core principles behind painting monochromatic portraits in gouache, with a focus on clarity, control, and understanding your materials.

Taught by artist and educator Emily Hughes, the course offers a helpful way to ease into using the tools in the Boundless Burrows Sketchbook & Palette Box Set. It covers paint consistency, water control, and brush handling — all of which translate naturally to breaking in a new sketchbook and getting comfortable with a fresh palette.

Emily takes a sculptural approach to painting, breaking down form and light through simplified references and clear flat-brush techniques. While the demonstrations focus on portraiture, the methods can be applied to colour studies, practice sessions, and other subjects beyond portraits.

The course is suitable for absolute beginners and is delivered as a recorded programme just under two hours long, so you can watch it at your own pace, whenever it feels useful.
