Why Cold Press paper?
Cold Press paper has a lightly textured surface that works beautifully with watercolour and mixed media. It gives pigment something to grip onto, making it ideal for washes, layering, texture-building, and expressive marks.
Why 100% cotton?
Cotton paper is the best surface for watercolour and is also great for mixed media. 100% cotton paper is capable of taking multiple heavy washes, stands up well to damaging techniques like dry brushing, and helps keep the pigment looking vibrant over the passage of time. The surface provides the perfect level of brush resistance while allowing the pigment to flow beautifully across the page. Those that "upgrade" to 100% cotton paper often credit it as having had a greater impact on their art than the quality of paint that they use.
Why is acid-free paper important?
The best paper is acid-free and has a high amount of cotton. Using acid-free paper helps to prevent the "yellowing" that can happen in paper over the years, meaning your art will stand the test of time.
Can you paint on both sides of the paper?
Yes you can. The sketchbook has 44 pages (or 22 sheets) and each page can be painted on thanks to the quality of the paper.
WHAT'S IN THE WORKSHOP?
Kate’s exclusive online workshop walks you through the inspiration behind the Moroccan Magic set and how to bring its colours, patterns, and materials together on the page.
You’ll learn how to gather inspiration, mix colours, build compositions, use the washi tapes as part of your artwork, and create layered abstract pieces in your sketchbook.
In the recording:
- An introduction to Kate and her creative practice
- A closer look at the set and Kate’s favourite materials
- Kate’s Morocco-inspired colour mixing approach and colour philosophy
- A Moroccan-inspired watercolour stripe demo using the washi from the set
And yes, you’ll get lifetime access, so you can watch whenever you’re ready and return to it as often as you like!
About this Collaboration
Moroccan Magic began with Kate’s travels through Morocco — the colours, patterns, architecture, nature, and everyday details she observed first-hand and translated into her unmistakable visual language.
This set is built around that sense of discovery. Every element works together to help you gather inspiration, explore colour, build compositions, and create abstract artwork guided by Kate’s own process.
For the first time, Kate is making her teaching available online through an exclusive workshop created for this set. She’ll show you how to use the materials together, including the custom washi tapes, while the mini prints offer creative guidance usually shared only in her in-person workshops.
Etchr is honoured to partner with Kate on a set that feels tactile, generous, and deeply personal — an invitation to step into a place through her eyes, then create from your own.
