Why Cotton Paper?

Cotton paper is the gold standard for watercolour — and it’s just as beautiful for mixed media.

The 50% cotton sketchbook in this set is perfect for experimentation. Its internal and external sizing makes the paper highly resistant to multiple washes, so you can layer, lift, and rework your art without damaging the surface.

The 100% cotton, 300gsm paper sheets are made for when you’re ready to go all in. They can take generous amounts of water, hold strong under dry brushing, and keep your colours vibrant and true over time — no buckling, no “bloink.”

Artists often say that switching to cotton paper changed their work more than any paint upgrade — and once you’ve felt the difference, it’s easy to see why.

How does the Calendar work?

This isn’t your usual calendar — it’s made for painting.

Printed on 50% cotton, 300gsm watercolour paper, each A5 page features a monthly affirmation and creative prompt, with a blank top section designed for you to paint, sketch, or experiment freely.

It’s both a gentle reminder to make time for art and a growing gallery of your creative year — one month, one mindful painting at a time.

Why is Acid-free paper important?

All the paper in this set — from the sketchbook to the loose sheets — is acid-free and archival grade, ensuring your artwork stays vibrant for years to come.

Acid-free paper prevents the yellowing and deterioration that can occur over time, helping your colours remain as fresh and true as the day you painted them.

Can you paint on both sides of the paper?

Absolutely. The A5 sketchbook features 60 pages (30 sheets) of 50% cotton paper, sized inside and out to handle multiple washes on both sides without warping.

The 100% cotton, 300gsm paper sheets are equally durable — you can paint on both sides with confidence, even when using generous layers of water and pigment.

WHAT'S IN THE COURSE?

Perfect for absolute beginners, this 90-minute course with Jocelyn Benford gently introduces you to combining water-soluble pencils with watercolours to create expressive abstract botanicals.

You’ll start with a few simple exercises to loosen up and explore colour, texture, and mark-making — then bring everything together in two complete paintings. Jocelyn shares approachable techniques for layering, blending, and mixing vibrant hues, helping you build confident compositions with ease.

It’s a calm, encouraging way to open your sketchbook, explore your paper sheets, and start filling them with colour, confidence, and imagination.

About Jocelyn

About Jocelyn

Jocelyn Benford is an abstract painter who works primarily with watercolours and mixed media. Her art is guided by intuition — exploring the interplay of colour, shape, and imperfect lines that give each piece its quiet rhythm.

After a lifetime of creative pursuits, Jocelyn discovered her true passion for painting during the 2020 lockdown. What began as a personal outlet quickly became a source of peace, balance, and joy. In 2022, she made the decision to retire early from teaching to dedicate more time to her art — a choice that continues to shape her vibrant, expressive body of work.
