What mediums are these brushes designed for?
The Kolinsky Studio Brush Set is designed primarily for watercolour, making use of Kolinsky hair’s water capacity, spring and responsiveness.
The brushes can also be used with traditional gouache, although we recommend keeping them primarily for watercolour to maintain their condition and performance. Avoid acrylics or other paints that can dry permanently in the natural hair.
Why Kolinsky hair?
Kolinsky hair combines excellent water-holding capacity with spring, responsiveness and the ability to hold a fine point, making it especially suited to watercolour painting where both fluidity and precise control are important.
Using Kolinsky across four different shapes lets you work from broader strokes and washes through to fine lines and small details while maintaining that responsive feel throughout the set.
What is the difference between the four brush shapes?
The Round 10 is the most versatile for broader strokes and washes, while the Round 4 gives you more control for smaller areas and details. The Liner 1 is designed for long, fine and expressive lines, while the Cat Tongue 8 combines a fuller body with a tapered tip for soft curves and varied-width marks.
How should I care for natural-hair brushes?
Rinse thoroughly in clean water after use, gently reshape the hairs and allow the brushes to dry flat. Avoid leaving them standing in water or allowing paint to dry in the hairs.
Once completely dry, store them in the included roll-up pouch.
