Why 100% cotton?

Cotton paper is the best surface for watercolour and is also great for mixed media. 100% cotton paper is capable of taking multiple heavy washes, stands up well to damaging techniques like dry brushing, and helps keep the pigment looking vibrant over the passage of time. The surface provides the perfect level of brush resistance while allowing the pigment to flow beautifully across the page. Those that "upgrade" to 100% cotton paper often credit it as having had a greater impact on their art than the quality of paint that they use.

Why is acid-free paper important?

The best paper is acid-free and has a high amount of cotton. Using acid-free paper helps to prevent the "yellowing" that can happen in paper over the years, meaning your art will stand the test of time.

Can you paint on both sides of the paper?

Yes you can. The square sketchbook has 48 pages (or 24 sheets) and each page can be painted on thanks to the quality of the paper. The accordion sketchbook can be painted on both sides as well.

WHAT'S IN THE TUTORIAL?

The tutorial is divided into three parts to guide you through both inspiration and technique. Sue begins by sharing her journey as an artist and what inspires her work. She then explains the meaning behind this Limited Edition collaboration and why it’s so close to her heart.

The main tutorial focuses on painting a whimsical boat scene inside the 12cm × 12cm brown sketchbook, using the hot press cotton paper. Sue demonstrates how to build the scene step by step—showing how she approaches composition, applies soft layers of watercolour, and creates light, shadow, and texture to bring the subject to life. She also shares her approach to colour, including how she selects hues and builds her signature palette.

Rather than encouraging direct copying, Sue invites each artist to personalise and reimagine the boat in their own way—adding small details, experimenting with colours, and letting their own story shape the piece. There’s space to explore your own artistic voice and make the painting truly yours.

As a bonus, she includes a looser, expressive exercise on the cold press pages—helping you compare the two paper types and make the most of your sketchbook.

It’s a gentle and inspiring way to break into the sketchbooks and begin filling them with confidence and imagination.
